Annotated Bibliography
After researching a few topics for my annotated bibliography, I think I have settled on a subject that will be a bit controversial but is a good argument. I chose to make the production and distribution of cigarettes illegal. I think this is very important because of the obvious health issues to not only those who smoke, but anyone that is around the cigarette smoke. Some of the issues I would argue is the health issues, second hand smoke and how dangerous it is, the diseases it can cause, how much money a person could save by not purchasing cigarettes, and cost of health care. The only positive thing that I can think of about the sale of cigarettes is the money generated by taxes and what they could put that money to use. A lot of people think it should be their right to smoke but it is worse for a person to smoke cigarettes than it is to smoke marijuana, yet marijuana is illegal and cigarettes should be too. I know marijuana is a banned topic but was just using it as a comparison that cigarettes are loaded with chemicals and God knows what, where as marijuana is smoked in its natural state with no added chemicals but yet still illegal. I used to smoke cigarettes and it was the best decision of my life to quit, not only for me but for my wife and kids. I quit because my 7 year old has asthma and all kinds of respiratory problems and I loved her enough to quit. My mother smoked 3 packs a day for as long as I can remember and she had asthma, COPD, and emphysema and eventually died of respiratory failure. I suppose because of this I feel very passionate about this subject because it is just a horrible way to go and could save so many lives.

This is a sensitive subject, I agree with you and disagree. I am a smoker.... and I do understand the negative effects it has on people, but I do not believe it should be banned, if we banned smoking you would have to ban drinking as well. They both have negative effects on people. I can say, I wish I had never picked up the habit, and I have tried to quit several times, but have been unsuccessful.
ReplyDeleteit would not hurt my feelings for alcohol to be banned either! Keep trying to quit though, I smoked for almost 20 years and I quit last year and it was so worth it. Your still young, you can do this. Good luck!
DeleteI think that smoking should also be banned. I have never smoked because I am highly allergic to it. When I was younger my dad used to smoke around me and I would get very sick. To this day I cannot stand to be around cigarette smoke! I understand people have the right to choose, but when it harms yourself and others I see no need.
ReplyDeleteI agree smoking should be banned. Those arguing about rights, what about our right to not breath dirty air. I have never smoked, but have three siblings who do and a husband who dips. The cost alone is reason enough to quit. The health issues are another reason, smokers may get lung cancer among other things; and dippers may loose their lip, tongue, and the esophagus is effected by both.
ReplyDeleteI agree that smoking should be banned. When I was younger my mom used to smoke and I begged her to quit so she did, but now about eighteen years later she has started smoking again. I think they are a waste of money and I cannot stand when I hear someone say "I am going to die somehow" and that is exactly what she says. I just wish smokers could save the money they plan on buying cigarettes with for one year and see what they could be saving themselves.
ReplyDeleteI am kind of border line on deciding whether or not cigarettes should be banned. For one, the person obviously knows the risks and harm that a cigarette can cause. He or she knows about all the chemicals in a cigarette. Smoking is talked about on the media too much for a person not to know the risks, causes, and ingredients. If that person still wants to smoke after knowing all of that, let them be. It is their own health they want to damage.
ReplyDeleteI do not smoke and completely agree that smoking is very harmful. I am very happy that smoking is banned in public. I am also very happy that smoking is banned inside a vehicle when minors are present. While I am very happy that smoking is banned in the ways that it is, I do not believe it should be made illegal altogether. I believe as Americans we have the right to do as we please in the privacy of our homes.
ReplyDeleteI do not smoke and me personally think that smoking is wasting money. I know that so many people smoke, but what I do not understand is a broke person will go buy something to smoke and have to beg for the things that he or she need. I think to keep everybody from smoking, it should be a law made not to even sell them anymore. Smoking have already been banned from so many public places, so people should just give up on smoking.
ReplyDeleteI also think that smoking should be against the law. It is so harmful to the person smoking and even more harmful to the people around them. It is illegal to give underage kid alcohol but it is ok to smoke around them. The only good thing about smokers is the fact that they are raising taxes on them to help with the debt of the country.
ReplyDeleteI have never smoked a single cigarette, and hopefully never will. I do believe that if someone wants to harm their body, even if it is not right, that should be their choice. Freedom in America is getting limited enough by new bills and laws passed every day. Smoking may not be a smart thing to do, but people smoke. If it became illegal, it would just become like other street drugs.
ReplyDeleteI am a smoker but God only knows how bad I wish I never started. I think there should be tougher laws against cigarettes so that maybe the next generation won't be as inclined to start smoking. I have a teen son (16) and a few weeks ago I found a pack in his room with two ciggs in it. I was so angry and hurt, but what could I say I smoke. So I crumbled the cigarettes up inside the pack wrote a note that stated "BUSTED KIDS WHO LIVE IN THIS HOUSE DON'T SMOKE" i put the note folded up in the pack where you could see the word busted when you opened the pack and put it right back where I found it. I don't want to see my kids grow up and be addicted like I am.
